about
Lightarmour Editions - LE29RMX
The underground Melbourne scene in 1994 was a rich, vibrant hotbed of musical innovation, and a good swathe of it seemed to be emanating from the Dorobo Label (Darrin Verhargen of Shinjuku Thief fame) & and one of its sub-labels ‘Iridium’.
SNOG loomed large on the Electronica/Industrial landscape and were enjoying an unexpected run of crossover popularity. This, of course, was a perfect moment for the perpetual maverick David Thrussell to drop a groundbreaking & experimental sound-thing; a thematic and sonic assault way ahead of the pack, a benchmark release that to this day is aspired to by artists internationally.
The project was called Black Lung & the album, which captured a new electro-brutalism, was titled “The Depopulation Bomb”. I recall vividly the impact it had on those around me who had ears to hear, and imagination to ponder. I also recall hearing it playing loud in late-night dens wherever young counter-culture rascals gathered. The track that always stood out to me was Angstlos (German word meaning ‘Fearless’) - a grinding slow-burn masterpiece of ominous electronica, a genre-busting classic that wraps you in dark molasses while kicking you in the solar plexus. In 1994 it was a dystopian futurist trip, and it still is.
It is fair to say that Black Lung's 'The Depopulation Bomb' birthed many violent new forms of electronic music: Powernoise, Isolationism and Hardcore Techno are seeded within its dark grooves. The early Black Lung albums became worldwide, seething, underground hits - played in (or playing at) the global temples of avant-techno: Tresor in Berlin, Le Gibus in Paris, The Cooler in NYC and many, many others. Black Lung would play with (and remix) Aphex Twin, Alec Empire, Atom™, Kraftwerk and a sea of electronic music notables.
In preparation for the “Conspiracy Of One” retrospective LP (yes finally), and upcoming Black Lung festival dates, it is an honour and a poetic full-circle to offer an in-house remix of Angstlos that takes the distinct core of the original and laces it in new shiny armour.

If it wasn't for the four -almost- identical tracks 1,5,8,15 this album would have never triggered my attention. Then I discoverd many remnants of artistical geniality found in classic Black Lung releases in between. As this controversial Nexium cult must have refreshed david thrussels brains and induce next level composing strategies, I quickly acknowledged this album as a top notch addition to his unique repertoire, steering at the front of time, and fully worthy for a release on ant-zen.
