Lightarmour Editions - LE15

Open Mirror is a Perth-based Ambient/Electronica composer whose work sounds like the great Space Music of the 70s passed through the filter of contemporary sensibilities. In the rich synthwork and layered melodies of the debut we find also some of the signature 2000’s sound of France’s Ultimae Records (in particular Solar Fields and Carbon Based Lifeforms), as well as Tangerine Dream, Michael Stearns, John Carpenter’s soundtrack work, and some of the edge of Skinny Puppy / Download.

But these are just general touchstones; Open Mirror has its own bent on epic soundscapes, spooky narrative textures, and a X-files sound mystery centered on radio communications with the beyond - no really, some of the embedded dialogue is taken from so-called ‘Spirit Box’ sessions, and listening out for the interplay between the Spirit Box operator and the ‘responses’ makes for some unexpectedly powerful moments.

Contact Void has a precise and glittering sound to it, yet packs a very human and emotional wallop. It is a stellar sample of the debut album in final production - Contact Mortis - and if you’re willing to delve into the void on offer here you are assured a head-trip not easily forgotten.
