Pale Leagues is Melbourne-based Producer George Hatzigeorgiou, a prominent figure in Melbourne’s underground scene for many years now, who began his explorations into the realms of outlier music as a founding member of seminal 90’s Melbourne Goth project In Sect, which later mutated into Extreme Metal project Halo. Serving with a number of Melbourne’s underground assemblies including Leviathan, Betty Loves Satan, Lords of Ruin, Terminal Sound System and Israal, Pale Leagues is the outcome and distillation of a career-long intent to unlock the excesses of dark emotional energy.
Object is Pale Leagues’ debut on Lightarmour - a lovingly reworked/remastered edition of 2020’s initial release, available finally on vinyl and including an exclusive remix as well as bonus tracks.
Object is a taste of the exciting places Pale Leagues is heading towards, and pulls all the threads of past musical dalliances together into a surprising and original outcome. If 4AD, at the height of their classic and unforgettable era, had signed a Doom Metal artist, it may have sounded something like this. Crucially though, Pale Leagues is not an artefact of the past; in fact out of the corpus of that vaguely Doom Metal-ish form, there is the sense of a new ascending spirit. Object pulls a monolithic and emotive punch in a hard-won soundscape of light and dark textures, Nordic Folk cinematics, Evoken-like atmospherics, Lycia-style lushness, and even the epic ghost of Dead Can Dance.
The final surprise is that, in a genre soundscape known for its furrowing focus on depression (and associated comfort), these songs manage to unexpectedly transform the funereal into an understated but jewel-encrusted exaltation. This slight-of-hand was one of the primary elements that drew our interest.
